Located in the heart of New York City’s East Village, Russo’s is much more than your typical Italian grocery store—it’s a cherished slice of authentic Italian heritage brought to life through its carefully curated selection of fresh produce, artisanal ingredients, and mouthwatering sandwiches. Nestled at 344 E 11th St, Russo’s exudes an unmistakable old-world charm that transports visitors back in time, offering a nostalgic glimpse of the traditional Italian deli experience that’s becoming increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced world.
What truly sets Russo’s apart is its dedication to quality and authenticity. From fresh mozzarella that melts beautifully on the tongue, to robust salamis and handcrafted pastas that taste as if they've been made by generations of Italian grandmothers, every item on the shelves is a testament to genuine Italian craftsmanship. Customers consistently rave about the freshness and exceptional flavor of the store’s products, with Marie describing Russo’s as "a little page right out of history," perfectly capturing the feeling of stepping into a place that honors tradition while serving up vibrant, delicious food.
But Russo’s isn’t just a grocery store; it’s a destination for anyone looking to savor hearty, generous sandwiches packed with bold flavors. Regulars like Andross swear by the “fat, oversized” sandwiches that not only satisfy but also deliver incredible value. The option to customize—adding meats or other delightful extras—makes each visit a unique experience catered to your cravings. Be cautious, though, as some customers advise avoiding the chicken cutlets, which haven’t met the high standards set by the rest of the menu. For those seeking more than a quick bite, Russo’s sandwiches can easily stretch into two meals, as Erica Gbur notes, making it an ideal pairing with Veniero’s pastries next door and a perfect picnic companion for Tompkins Square Park just a short walk away.
Russo’s atmosphere is best described as genuine and unpretentious. Jack Werner aptly captures it as a "perfect, charming, oldtimey Italian deli" where there’s no fuss—just excellent food and quality Italian ingredients. However, some customers have mentioned that the pricing isn’t always clearly displayed and that the service could benefit from a bit more warmth, suggesting a slight room for improvement in the overall shopping experience.
Despite these minor quibbles, Russo’s retains a loyal following, a testament to the authenticity and care baked into every aspect of this historic spot. Whether you’re fueling up on a substantial sandwich or selecting premium Italian delicacies to bring home, Russo’s delivers a genuine taste of Italy in the bustling streets of New York City. For anyone longing for fresh, flavorful, and traditionally made Italian foods, Russo’s is a true gem worth exploring.

Amazing sandwiches for the price . Fat oversized . Amazing . Pro tip - add meat and whatever makes ya happy to one of the menu sandwiches . Do not get chicken cutlets. Every time they are just bad .
A perfect, charming, old-timey Italian deli. No BS. Amazing sandwiches and Italian ingredients for sale. I don’t want to say too much so that it doesn’t get too busy!
Perfect pairing to go along with Veniero’s next door. Sandwiches are absolutely delicious and great amount of food (each sandwich lasts me two meals). And on a nice day, you can take your sandwich to Tompkins Square Park down the block for a nice meal outside (no indoor seating).
Delicious and fresh food, but there are hardly any prices visible. I got a grilled chicken deli sandwich, a small container of pesto, parmesan cheese and the 12ct short rib ravioli for $46. Everything tasted fresh, but please list prices. They could also be a little friendlier in there.
Russo’s is a little page right out of history... a step back in time, like it should be. The most amazing, fresh produce and delicacies from the old country. Fresh Mozzarella, salami, pasta. Outta this world. Highly recommended. Hope this place goes on forever.
